Counselling Methods 2

This unit is part of the counselling specialisation and is an extension and development of Counselling Methods 1. This unit provides an introduction to additional major counselling and psychotherapeutic methodologies, theories, and applications. Students will have opportunities to integrate their preferred method of counselling, and deepen their understanding of the theory and practice of other major counselling methods and approaches. Students study the philosophical theories and practical application of a range of approaches to counselling. A variety of other therapeutic modification and contemporary approaches are explored throughout the study of this unit.

  • Describe the historical development and underpinning philosophical foundation of counselling and psychotherapeutic methodologies and approaches studied 
  • Identify and describe the counselling approaches informed by phenomenology 
  • Describe the philosophy and approach of existential psychotherapy, person-centred therapy and Gestalt therapy 
  • Describe the philosophy and approach of narrative therapy, and solution focused therapy 
  • Demonstrate the application of the methods of counselling studied
  • Discuss the ethical and professional standards in the practice of counselling and psychotherapy

Unit Duration and Workload

This unit involves a total of 36 hours of face to face delivery of self directed study including educator contact in flexible delivery modes, generating a further 54 hours of self-study per unit including research and related study activities, including assessment. This translates to 7.5 hours per week for the unit.
