Counselling Methods 2

Module outline:

This module is an extension and development of Counselling Methods 1 and provides an introduction to further major counselling theories, methods and strategies.

Students will have opportunities to integrate their preferred method of counselling and to deepen their understanding of the theory and practice of major counselling approaches. Students study the phenomenological orientation and how its philosophy underlies several counselling approaches. Person-Centred Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, Systemic Therapy, Group Therapy, Structural, Strategic and Feminist Approaches, Milan and Experiential Approaches, Narrative Therapy, Brief Therapy and many other approaches are explored, studied and experienced.

Learning outcomes:

  • Identify the range of counselling approaches informed by the Phenomenological philosophy
  • Discuss the philosophy and approach of Existential Therapy, Person-Centred Therapy and Gestalt Therapy.
  • Compare and contrast the therapeutic goals of Gestalt, Person-Centred, Transactional Analysis and Existential Therapy
  • Explain the principles and techniques used in Family and Systems, Narrative and Group Therapy
  • Integrate preferred method of counselling into professional practice
  • Discuss ethical and professional standards in the practice of counselling

This module is available on campus, by distance education or online.
