Groupwork Theory And Practice

This module provides an introduction to the theory and practice of groupwork and develops the capacity to apply the knowledge and skills of groupwork to a range of contexts and settings.

Students study the stages of group development, explore group dynamics and learn to facilitate groups in awareness of the underlying processes that may be affecting group functions. Groupwork Theory and Practice is a highly interactive and experiential module in which group theory and practice are integrated so that students experience and understand the 'whys' and 'hows' of groups and group processes.

Students learn to identify the interpersonal dynamics at work in groups, to recognise focal conflict issues, to apply effective intervention strategies, to understand and appropriately facilitate a group and to situate what happens in group work into a theoretical and practical framework.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Outline historical perspectives on the development and application of groupwork and group therapy
  • Demonstrate groupwork planning, program development and associated administrative functions
  • Identify the key elements of group dynamics and group processes
  • Demonstrate the application of adult learning principles and appropriate techniques and intervention strategies for facilitating a group process
  • Observe a group and analyse a range of intervention strategies to manage a variety of groupwork situations
  • Compare group leadership styles and the theoretical perspectives that inform them
  • Demonstrate ethical groupwork behaviour and identify professional development needs and strategies
