Module Synopsis

This module explores models and definitions of leadership through consideration of historical and contemporary representations of leadership. An agreed set of principles of leadership will be explored and applied to the student's understanding and experience of leadership. The module requires students to reflect on their own capacity to lead. The module particularly uses deficit examples of leadership as a way of inquiring into models, effects and effectiveness of leadership.

  • Develop ability to understand, construct and apply leadership attributes within a range of situations
  • Demonstrate understanding of cultural diversity within leadership theories
  • Demonstrate ability to research leadership and its implications
  • Critique examples of leadership, particularly as presented by popular media
  • Demonstrate application of agreed leadership attributes to identified leaders
  • Explore the complex social, legal and ethical issues associated with leadership issues
  • Demonstrate understanding of personal capacity to be a leader
  • Evaluate personal responses to the issues explored and analyse how these may impact upon the leader and leadership

  • Undertake and reflect upon the role of leadership in complex areas

Module Duration and Workload:
This module involves a total of 36 hours of face to face delivery or self-directed study including educator contact in flexible delivery modes, generating a further 120 hours of self-study per module including research and related study activities, including assessment. This translates as 13 hours per week for the module.

The studies, combined with my previous work experience, have led me into a more satisfying role in an industry I know well. My studies have given me the confidence to manage a role where top notch "soft skills" are essential.
