NSW Program Features

In order to gain registration as a Psychologist, the NSW Psychologists Registration Board requires a four year degree in Psychology. Graduates are then required to complete 2000 hours workplace experience in NSW and 160 hours of supervision and professional development.

The Supervision Program is a combination of

  • Workplace Experience - 20 hours per week over 2 years minimum
  • Individual Supervision - 60 supervision hours
  • Group Supervision - 40 supervision hours
  • Training / Workshops Seminars - 60 supervision hours

Entry Requirements

To gain entry into the Program, applicants must have an approved four year qualification in Psychology. Applicants will be interviewed to assess their suitability for the Program.

Workplace Experience

Each intern is provided with interesting and challenging workplace experience from ACAP's extensive network of placement organisations. Placements are selected by ACAP to meet the requirements of the NSW Psychologists Registration Board; doing psychological work involving one-on-one intervention with clients.

Individual Supervision

Each intern will have an opportunity to select a supervisor that best meets his/her needs from our pool of highly trained, registered Psychologists. All our supervisors have many years experience as practitioners and are specifically trained and accredited as supervisors.

Group Supervision

The group supervision component of the Program involves small groups of five or six interns meeting with a skilled supervisor in this experiential learning mode. The group supervisor facilitates a 4-hour group involving case presentation and discussion, education, and experiential learning. The five core topics reflect the Key Standards in which every Psychologist registering in NSW must be competent. Additionally, five elective supervision groups are selected by interns according to their area of speciality or interest.

Training Workshops

Interns also choose three modules from a large range of psychology and counselling-related courses provided by ACAP. These are offered in a number of formats including during term (morning, afternoon, or evening), or in condensed form over weekends or summer school.

Psychological (Psychometric) Testing Module

Many interns choose the 20-hour Psychological (Psychometric) Testing Module as one of their training workshops as it provides in-depth supervision and training in this important area. Each intern will have the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills in a variety of psychological tests and assessments in the following areas:

IQ WISC IV, WAIS III, Raven's Progressive Matrices
Personality NEO-PIR and Personality Assessment Inventory
Specific Functioning Wechsler Memory Scale
Mood Beck Depression Scale, Beck Anxiety Scale, Depression Anxiety Stress Scale
Organisational Self-Directed Search, Differential Aptitude Test, Modern Occupational Skills Test, Wonderlic Personnele Test, Watson Glasser Critical Thinking Appraisal

 

There will also be opportunities to access the College's test library and resource material.
