Introduction to Psychology

Through this module students learn the scope and range of psychology in its application to life and the relevance of psychological theories, principles and techniques. Through the study of psychological theory and practice students begin to develop conceptual frameworks to appreciate and understand the dynamics of human behaviour. They explore the meaning of scientific method in psychology and undertake minor research experiments to appreciate the methodology and practice of psychology and its role in the behavioural and social sciences. Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the basic concepts and techniques of psychology and evaluate research findings relating to specific issues in psychology.

Learning outcomes

  • Describe the role of psychology in various contexts and its contribution to the social and behavioural sciences.
  • Describe the components and functions of biological systems, instinct, learned behaviours and genetics on human behaviour.
  • Discuss the behaviourist approach to learning, states of consciousness, memory, cognition and intelligence, motivation, emotion and personality.
  • Explain the influence of social and cultural issues on the practice of psychology.
  • Apply the terminology and concepts of basic psychological theory and evaluate the findings of minor research experiments.
