Performance and Development Counselling

Module Synopsis

This module equips students to identify, assess and manage a range of commonly experienced issues within the organisational setting that may require support. It highlights the importance of a range practical intervention and has a particular focus on referrals as an important part of the process. Core counselling skills are identified as part of the relational competencies for managers. An integrated exploration of legal and ethical issues is contained within each topic area.

Learning outcomes
  • Development of core counselling skills such as listening, assertiveness, problem clarification, questioning, anxiety management
  • Demonstrated sensitivities necessary to work with the interplay between work and personal issues
  • Development of capacity for critical reflection, assessment and management of issues faced within the organisational setting
  • Application of an in-depth understanding of professional ethics, boundaries and responsibilities in practice
  • Demonstrated willingness and capacity to use feedback for further improvement in skills and management approaches

Module Duration and Workload:
This module involves a total of 36 hours of face to face delivery or self-directed study including educator contact in flexible delivery modes, generating a further 120 hours of self-study per module including research and related study activities, including assessment. This translates as 13 hours per week for the module.
