Meet ACAP Graduate Angie Soumilas
Angie graduated with a Graduate Diploma of Counselling in 2013 studying on-campus in Melbourne. She is currently in her fourth year of Psychology at Deakin University.
How has studying with ACAP benefited you?
When I began my studies with ACAP, I had already completed an undergraduate degree in psychology, which provided me with no practical experience. The two fieldwork placements I completed via my experience at ACAP refined my career pathway for me, and provided me with a taste of what it is like in the workforce within the mental health field.
ACAP has assisted me professionally by developing and strengthening my counselling skills, and it has provided me with experience in working with real cases/clients. It assisted me in adding a range of counselling skills to my knowledge base, and provided me with practical experience. As my second placement was conducted at a secondary school, I gained experience in working with adolescents; a developmental phase I have always been interested in.
Describe your ACAP experience.
The teachers at ACAP were professional, friendly, approachable, and had great knowledge bases surrounding the subjects. The learning environment was cosy and friendly, and the small class sizes allowed students to form strong relationships both amongst themselves, and with the teachers.
I was provided with detailed comments on my assessments, reinforcing my achievements, and communicating areas for improvement in a gentle and constructive manner. The materials utilised throughout the course were helpful, and the course was structured nicely. Overall, I had a pleasant experience at my time studying with ACAP.
How have you used your ACAP qualification?
Upon completion of my studies at ACAP, I commenced my Fourth year in Psychology at Deakin University.
What are your future plans?
I plan on becoming a fully qualified psychologist, within the clinical or counselling area, working with adolescents and adults. I also plan on one day gaining experience within the Forensic field, to assist in offender assessment and rehabilitation.
What would you say to someone considering studying at ACAP?
If you are looking for a friendly, supportive, encouraging environment, then ACAP will assist you. If you prefer to learn in small class sizes, ACAP caters for this. But above all, if you are interested in learning about the counselling profession as well as gain experience, the Graduate Diploma in Counselling will provide this.
