Cultural Diversity and Workplace Legislation

VET Diploma Level Module

This module is designed to provide you with awareness of cultural diversity and workplace legislation and the implications of these when working in the counselling field. Students will be encouraged to consider the nature of cultural diversity and the ways in which they are able to work effectively with culturally diverse clients and co-workers, including Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. Students will also be asked to consider occupational health and safety issues in the workplace.

Skills and knowledge developed in this module are intended to be applied in a variety of workplace contexts.

Learning Elements

The unit of competency HLTHIR403C Work effectively with culturally diverse clients and co-workers contains four elements or learning outcomes. You will learn to:

  • reflect cultural awareness in work practice
  • accept cultural diversity as a basis for effective workplace and professional relationships
  • communicate effectively with culturally diverse persons
  • resolve cross-cultural misunderstandings

The unit of competency HLTHIR404D Work effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people contains four elements or learning outcomes. You will learn to:

  • reflect an awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and cultures in work practices
  • reflect an awareness of own and other cultural realities in work practices
  • communicate effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • reflect cultural safety in workplace and professional relationships
  • work in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities

The unit of competency HLTWHS300A Contribute to WHS processes. You will learn to:

  • plan and conduct work safely
  • support others in working safely
  • contribute to WHS participative processes
  • contribute to hazard identification, WHS risk assessment and risk control activities
  • participate in the control of emergency situations

Module Duration and Workload

This module involves a total of 96 hours per term of study including course work component, teacher contact, research and related study activities, translating to approximately 8 hours of study per week. Students will need to allocate additional time for the completion of assessment activities related to the module.
