Working with Young People in Crisis


VET Diploma Level Subject

This is the key orientation subject to youth work practice and understanding young people in crisis.

Each week you will learn about three key skills and knowledge development that are essential in the practice of youth work when addressing crisis and risk of harm indicators and behaviours.

  • An understanding of knowledge and skills to identify indicators of all types of abuse.
  • A detailed understanding of young people in crisis and strategic methods of intervention to manage young people in crisis.
  • Knowledge of relevant policies, procedures and legislation required when working with young people in crisis. An ability to develop professional and ethical practice in the delivery of youth work.

Upon completion on this module students will become familiar with the essential forms of intervention required when assessing and dealing with a young person in crisis and at risk of harm.

Learning Elements

Subjects are composed of Units of Competency from the government endorsed Diploma of Youth Work Training Package. This subject has two units of competency: CHCPRT001 Identify and respond to children and young people at risk and CHCYTH012 Manage service response to young people in crisis.

The unit of competency CHCPRT001 Identify and respond to children and young people at risk contains three elements or learning outcomes. You will learn to:

  • Implement work practices which support the protection of children and young people
  • Report indications of possible risk of harm
  • Apply ethical and nurturing practices in work with children and young people

The unit of competency CHCYTH012 Manage service response to young people in crisis contains three elements or learning outcomes. You will learn to:

  • Implement a framework for preventing crisis situations
  • Support staff in responding to a crisis
  • Follow-up crisis situations

Content Areas

  • How and when youth workers respond to young people in crisis
  • Defining child abuse types and indicators of abuse
  • The impact of child abuse on young people and children/Socio -psycho issues that influence child abuse
  • Applying child protection that impact on service policy and procedures
  • Responding to imminent harm – self harm, suicidal ideations and mental health in young people
  • Applying ethical and nurturing practices when working with children and young people
  • Implement work practices which support the protection of children and young people; Juvenile Justice
  • Responding to indicators and disclosures of harm by implementing an appropriate framework for practice
  • Develop and implement practices that promote collaboration with external and internal agencies
  • Create procedures to support staff and external agencies to support young people in crisis
  • Boundaries, positive communication and assertive intervention

Subject Duration and Workload

This subject involves a total of 174 hours per term of study including course work, teacher contact, work placement and research and related study activities.

This subject is undertaken over a 12-week term. In addition to the 4 hours of teacher-led class time each week, students are expected to spend an average of 7 hours of study per week on this subject over the course of the term. In addition students will need to allocate additional time for the completion of assessment activities including assessments based in work placement.
