Question

Answer

Q1. What is changing and why?

The course, CHC51712 Diploma of Counselling has been replaced by a revised course, CHC51015 Diploma of Counselling.  All Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) across Australia, such as ACAP, will be working on introducing the new qualification to replace the CHC51712 Diploma of Counselling.

Q2. What is the difference between the two courses?

The main changes are:

  1. Significant changes to core units
  2. Introduction of different core units
  3. Significant changes to assessment requirements

Q3.  Will there be Work Placement?

There are no work placement requirements for CHC51015 Diploma of Counselling. Skill development and assessments will occur progressively in the classroom for on campus students and in Workshops for online students.

Workshops have increased in number and extended to a 3 day format to meet the training package requirements for students to demonstrate their skills and knowledge “in the workplace or in a simulated environment that reflects workplace conditions” (Community Services & Health Skills Council, 2015).

Students are encouraged to seek voluntary work in the Community Services Sector during their studies to support their skill development and future employment.

Q4. Is the CHC51712 qualification still accepted to get  work?

Yes. The current course you are studying continues to be recognised by the Community Services Industry. It continues to be accepted for articulation into ACAP's higher education courses as per current arrangements.  It continues to be recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).

Q5. Can I complete the course CHC51712 Diploma of Counselling?

Due to a recent regulatory change our initial transition groups have been revised to the following:

  • Transition Group 1a - brand new students who have yet to commence their studies and are starting in Trimester 2, 2016, this group has been transitioned and is now complete
  • Transition Group 1b - deferred students who not yet completed any subjects, this group has been transitioned and is now complete
  • Transition Group 1c - students who have not completed any subjects and have only achieved Not Yet Competent grades up to and including Summer School 2016, this group has been transitioned and is now complete
  • Transition Group 2 – All remaining students studying CHC51712 have until the end of Trimester 1, 2017 to complete their course or be transitioned at the commencement of Trimester 2, 2017

Many students will have the opportunity to complete the course within the new time frames set by ASQA (Transition Group 2). If you are unable to complete your course within these timeframes, you will need to transition into the revised course CHC51015.

The revised course CHC51015 is significantly different from CHC51712. The revised course CHC51015 requires students to undertake different units of competency and in some cases additional assessment tasks. It is therefore the recommendation of ACAP that students who are apart of Transition Group 2 to try and complete their Diploma studies by no later than the end of T1,2017.

Students who have been identified as not being  able to complete CHC51712 by the Government imposed deadline of end Trimester 1, 2016 will be progressively moved to CHC51015 at the commencement of Trimester 3, 2016 and Trimester 1, 2017.
