Diploma of Counselling CHC51015

This VET qualification provides the skills and knowledge in counselling and high level communication required to undertake work within the community services industry.

Students are required to attend on-campus workshops which provide opportunities to put their skills into practice.

On successful completion of this course, students are eligible for direct entry into the following ACAP courses:

  • Bachelor of Applied Social Science, Bachelor of Counselling, Bachelor of Counselling (Coaching) with credit for eight units; or
  • Bachelor of Psychological Science with credit for eight out of 24 non-psychology units of study; or
  • Bachelor of Social Work with credit for six units of study.

This course contains 17 units of competency, all needing successful completion, in order to be gain the qualification. 17 units of competency have been clustered into nine subjects.

If during or after your enrolment, the course in which you are enrolled is updated in line with national industry standards, ACAP reserves the right to transition you into the updated course. If this becomes necessary, ACAP will advise you of the change and the arrangements which will be available for you to complete the updated course.

Entry Criteria/Prerequisites

Meet one of the following requirements:

  • Completion of a Certificate IV or above (or equivalent); or
  • Completion of a Senior Secondary Certificate of Education (or equivalent); or 
  • Completion of the Core Skills Profile for Adults (CSPA) at exit level 3 of the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) in both literacy and numeracy.

VET Student Loan Student Entry Procedure
It is a Commonwealth legislated requirement that all students applying for a Commonwealth VET Student Loan must be assessed for academic suitability to undertake a high level 
VET qualification. This is a student protection measure introduced from 1 Jan 2016 and is in addition ACAP’s course entry criteria/prerequisites.

ACAP’s Diploma of Counselling CHC51015 is available on-campus in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne or Adelaide, or by online delivery, which combines online study with compulsory on-campus weekend workshops. You can also study the Diploma of Counselling CHC51015 in mixed mode, a combination of online delivery and on-campus study.

Study Modes

On-campus study in Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide or Melbourne
On-campus study requires you to attend one class per week for each of the subjects you are studying. Classes provide an interactive and hands-on experience, which allows your teacher to provide immediate feedback on your work in class.

Online delivery
With online delivery you can study anywhere, anytime. All classes have an online class space containing course materials, discussion forums and announcements, student profiles and assessment drop boxes and are accessible to the class group and the teacher.

You can choose to study each of your subjects in different modes, subject to availability, to create a study mode that fits your lifestyle. You can select different modes of study for different subjects in a given trimester and you can change the mode of study you select when you enrol each trimester. The maximum tuition fee is $14 355. The maximum course tuition fee quoted is applicable to all students who:
(a)  begin study in the next scheduled trimester; and
(b) maintain a course enrolment consistent with ACAP's Enrolment Rules and complete their studies within the advised maximum course duration of 3 years; and
(c) successfully complete each subject/unit of study on first attempt.
The advised maximum course fee will be exceeded where a student re-enrols in a subject. for any reason. Reasons for re-enrolment in a subject may include (but are not limited to):-
-  The student having been assessed as not yet competent in a subject requiring the unit to be reattempted; or
-  The student having not completed the subject for another reason and having not withdrawn from the subject by the census date.
Additional costs apply to the purchase of text books and course materials.

VET Student Loans (VSL) may be available to eligible students.

If you have already met ACAP’s VET course entry criteria/prerequisites outlined above, you will not need to provide any further documentation to ACAP, as you have already demonstrated to ACAP that you have met the requirements of the VET Student Loan Student Entry Procedure.

On-campus workshops form a vital part of the assessment and experiential learning process, providing students with face-to-face training in practical skills.
