CBT for Carers Group

The ACAP Psychology Clinic is currently recruiting participants for all groups.


To provide psycho-education, skill development, and support for people who provide care and support to a person with a disability or long-term condition.

Participants and Group Membership

Adult carers who are currently motivated to actively engage in a program aimed at improving coping skills and stress management. According to the 2007 National Survey of Carer's Health and Wellbeing carers have the lowest levels of well being of any Australian group, and this decreases with number of caring hours.

The group will have between 5 and 10 members. When the group commences membership will be closed and no new members will be added.


  • Learn about stress and stress management
  • Improve coping skills
  • Develop strategies to cope with negative or strong emotions and stressors
  • Improve sense of well being


The group is conducted in an interactive seminar format, with provision of information, discussion, skill development / feedback, and homework practice.


The group involves 16 hours of contact, 2 hours per week for 8 consecutive weeks.


Registered or Provisionally Registered Psychologists undertaking postgraduate training at the ACAP Psychology Clinic under the supervision of an endorsed clinical psychologist.

Costs to Participants

There is an enrolment fee of $40 covering the participant workbook, materials and refreshments payable at the time of enrolment. Group sessions are free of charge.

The CBT for Carers Group will be evaluated through self-report questionnaires, feedback on the group content and presentation.
