Overview of Associate Degree of Applied Social Science

The Associate Degree of Applied Social Science provides students with a foundational understanding of individuals, groups and social structures, and offers a broad grounding in sociological theory, social systems and social policy. The Associate Degree incorporates the main theoretical elements of the Bachelor of Applied Social Science, and maintains an applied focus in the development of coaching or counselling skills.

Students will acquire a broad theoretical foundation in the underlying principles and concepts of the social sciences. In particular, students will develop a substantial understanding of individuals, groups and society, human diversity, cultural sensitivity and skills in ethical decision making and critical thinking.

The Associate Degree provides a range of units from a variety of fields, including sociology, organisational theory, ethics, culture and diversity, applied psychology, and mental health. Knowledge and skills gained from these combined fields of knowledge provide graduates with a strong foundation for a variety of employment settings. Graduates will be well-informed critical thinkers who have the capacity to work in diverse organisational settings in the public, private and community sectors, with knowledge and skills in understanding social, community and organisational needs, and providing social and community support.

The Associate Degree of Applied Social Science is delivered in small group learning environments on-campus and online by well-qualified, experienced academic teachers with quality contemporary curriculum. The Counselling minor units are provided by blended delivery (both online and on-campus components) to foster skill development.
