Student Placement Requirements for the Bachelor of Applied Social Science
Placement Requirements and Placement Activities
Work-integrated Placement 1 (BESC3001) and Work-integrated Placement 2 (BESC3111) are placement units in the Professional Practice strand of the Bachelor of Applied Social Science. Each Work-integrated Placement unit includes 100 hours of placement in approved external organisations combined with 18 hours of placement seminars provided either on-campus or online.
In total, Bachelor of Applied Social Science students are required to complete 200 hours of placement over two consecutive terms, ideally in the same organisation, and 36 hours of placement seminars.
Placements are periods of unpaid work experience in approved human service organisations in which students have opportunities to put theory into practice. Student placements are also excellent opportunities to develop networks and explore career options and professional pathways.
To satisfactorily complete these units, students are required to:
- be assessed as satisfactory in the mid placement review and on completion of placement by their placement organisation
- complete a journal of their placement experience
- participate and contribute to placement seminars
- submit evidence that they have completed the required placement hours.
There are two levels of supervision provided in the Work-integrated Placement units: placement supervision and work-integrated seminars.
The Placement Supervisor is the supervisor employed by the placement organisation with whom students work closely on a daily basis while on placement. The placement supervisor must:
- be in a managerial or supervisory role in the organisation
- Have at least three years relevant experience
- Not be in a dual relationship with the student (eg. family member, partner, etc.)
Work-integrated seminars are timetabled fortnightly in three hour classes on-campus or online. In the seminars, students will:
- apply social science concepts to analyse practices in their placement organisations
- analyse the influence of policy, funding and social and cultural contexts on organisations' mission, values, roles, structure, functions and culture
- discuss ethical issues arising in the placement
