Master of Counselling and Psychotherapy Graduate Attributes

The graduate attributes for the Master of Counselling and Psychotherapy course are designed to align with the Australian Quality Framework specifications for Masters degrees (AQF Level 9). On completion of the degree, graduates will have attained the following attributes:


  • demonstrate in-depth knowledge of a range of theories and processes of contemporary psychotherapy and counselling, including individual and group therapy
  • critically compare and integrate counselling and psychotherapy theories
  • articulate a personal philosophy of counselling and psychotherapy through an integration of counselling and psychotherapy models studied in the course
  • integrate aspects of human diversity, including culture, gender, age, ability, class, religion and ethnicity, and the influence of power differences on the therapeutic relationship and outcomes
  • understand the influence of social and biological determinants of mental health on individual, family and community wellbeing
  • understand and apply a range of theories of supervision
  • assess stages of human development to inform therapeutic interventions
  • assess and integrate major mental health diagnostic categories and plan evidence based treatment for a broad spectrum of mental health issues
  • demonstrate responsiveness to consumer and career perspectives on mental health policy and services, including the recovery framework for service provision
  • design, implement and evaluate research studies relevant to the field of counselling and psychotherapy
  • develop and apply skills in a range of qualitative and quantitative research methods.


  • demonstrate advanced skills in assessment, case conceptualisation and intervention planning
  • demonstrate sound assessment and management of risk of suicide and suicidal behaviour
  • apply professional skills and sound clinical judgement in making appropriate referrals for clients with specialised needs
  • integrate skills in working with the client's process in brief, medium and long term therapy
  • demonstrate and apply advanced skills in evidence-based practice
  • implement ethical decision making skills in professional contexts
  • develop ICT skills necessary for professional practice.

Application of knowledge and skills

  • demonstrate skilled application of therapeutic interventions as appropriate for complex client presentations
  • integrate self-awareness and ethical use of self in therapeutic interventions
  • conceptualise and design research studies and the capacity to implement and report on research
  • effectively use supervision to enhance clinical competence on field placements and in the workplace
  • reduce blind spots in self-awareness to enhance empathy and professional objectivity.
  • Integrate feedback from clinical supervision into counselling practice, and cultivate the capacity for reflective practice, professional responsibility and accountability.
