COUN3041 Counselling Placement and Supervision 2

Bachelor Course Unit

Level: 300

Credit points: 6

Prerequisites: Counselling Placement & Supervision 1 (COUN3021)

Unit Description

This second unit of Counselling Placement and Supervision 2 allows you to continue to develop your knowledge and counselling skills in a live workplace, and by observing other students as they are supervised, and in your interactions with a PACFA-accredited clinical supervisor. This will ensure that you have an experience of professional, quality supervision in a supported learning environment. During this unit you will attend an approved agency.

As with COUN3031 Counselling Placement and Supervision 1, you will meet either online or on campus for two-hour supervision sessions on a weekly basis for 13 weeks of the term (excluding Week 7) with your Clinical Supervisor. This unit continues the process of linking theory to practise. It asks you to consider how the parallel experiences of being on placement, and reflecting on observations and feelings with a clinical supervisor can enhance your skills, theoretical knowledge and personal insight.

Weekly two-hour supervision sessions will again be a forum for you to bring cases to discuss, talk about occurrences on placement and learn how supervision across your career will assist in keeping you connected to skilled mentors, make ethical decisions and provide effective support for clients.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit students will be able to:

  • Effectively present and reflect on their counselling practice in group supervision;
  • Demonstrate skilled intervention planning and apply counselling models to meet client needs;

  • Demonstrate the ability to apply supervisor feedback to improve practice, and give feedback respectfully to other supervisees;

  • Demonstrate ethical thinking and decision-making skills, with respect for the rights and autonomy of clients;

  • Apply theoretical knowledge and counselling skills to practice with clients in counselling placements;

  • Describe the influence of organisational, social and cultural contexts on counselling practice;

  • Reflect on their counselling efficacy and prepare for future clinical practice.
