COUN0013 Counselling Skills

This unit provides the opportunity for personal and professional development. It is designed to further orientate the student to the helping professions and the centrality of the therapeutic relationship in therapeutic change. The unit highlights the significance of the person of the helping professional in professional practice. Elements of personhood such as personality, social style, and strength and limitations will be explored with a view to increasing self-awareness. Emphasis is placed on the importance of ongoing personal and professional development. The unit will also explore stages of the professional development of counsellors.
On completion of this unit, students will be able to:
a) identify personality characteristics and traits, and social styles
b) recognise personal qualities and capabilities which are relevant to professional practice
c) critically reflect on one’s own strengths and limitations as a helping professional and identify areas for further growth and development
d) demonstrate active listening in a peer conversation attending to Roger’s conditions of genuineness, empathy, and unconditional positive regard
e) describe stages of counsellor career development
