Counselling and Communication Skills

VET Diploma Level Subject

This subject covers the skills and knowledge required to use a structured approach to counselling to determine, establish and confirm the nature of the counsellor-client relationship according to the agency’s counselling model. You will learn the micro-skills of counselling and specialist communication skills to facilitate the counselling process.

The unit of competency CHCCSL001 Establish and confirm the counselling relationship contains three elements or learning outcomes. You will learn to:

The unit of competency CHCCSL002 Apply specialist interpersonal and counselling interview skills contains three elements or learning outcomes. You will learn to:

  • communicate effectively in counselling practice
  • use specialist communication skills in counselling practice
  • evaluate own communication

Subject Duration and Workload

This subject involves a total of 132 hours per term of study including course work component, teacher contact, research and related study activities, translating to approximately 11 hours of study per week. Students will need to allocate additional time for the completion of assessment activities related to the subject.
