VET Diploma Level Module
This subject describes the skills and knowledge required to establish relationships, clarify needs, and then work collaboratively with people who are living with mental health issues.
This subject applies to support workers in contexts outside the mental health sector, but who come into contact with people of any age with mental health issues. The services and support provided are not mental health specific.
This subject also describes the skills and knowledge required to work collaboratively with a person with mental illness and/or AOD issues to establish a basis for participation of family and carers in their individual recovery process and to facilitate ongoing participation in line with the person’s needs and wishes.
The unit of competency CHCMHS001 ‘Work with people with mental health issues’ contains three elements or learning outcomes. You will learn to:
- Establish respectful relationships with people with mental health issues
- Determine the needs of people with mental health issues
- Work with people with mental health issues to meet aspirations and needs
The unit of competency CHCMHS006 ‘Facilitate the recovery process with the person, family and carers’ contains three elements or learning outcomes. You will learn to:
- Involve the person, carers and families in planning support during recovery
- Facilitate recovery with appropriate involvement of carers and family
- Monitor and review involvement of carers and family
- Introduction to mental Health
- Values & principles within the mental health sector
- The individual, care and recovery

Subject Duration and Workload
This subject involves a total of 108 hours per term of study including course work component, teacher contact, research and related study activities, translating to approximately 9 hours of study per week. Students will need to allocate additional time for the completion of assessment activities related to the subject.
