Mr Averil CookLecturer
Averil Cook is a Clinical Psychologist and Clinical Academic in the School of Psychological Sciences with the Australian College of Applied Psychology where she primarily works with the Masters of Clinical Psychology training program. She has previously worked at UNSW in the Masters of Clinical Psychology program where she provided clinical supervision, and developed, and taught family therapy treatments. She completed her Clinical Doctorate and Masters of Science at The University of Sydney in which her research focused on the differential effects of ostracism on various DSM diagnoses.
Previously Averil was the team leader for the Infant, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (ICAMHS) in the South West of Sydney, a secondary mental health service where she established family therapy practices and eating disorders treatments with Campbelltown Hospital and ran a multidisciplinary team of Psychologists and Psychiatrists.
Prior to this Averil worked for a number of years in speciality teams at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead in the Eating Disorders Team, in consultation liaison and with teams specialising in somatoform, conversion disorder and gender dysphoria in which she developed new treatments for patients.
She has taught and supervised individuals and mental health teams across several NSW Local Health Districts within clinical psychology and psychiatry. Areas of teaching and publication include family therapy, family based therapy for eating disorders, complex trauma, somatoform disorders, complex clinical presentations and social psychology.
Averil is currently focused on building cultural competence for Clinical Psychology students in Indigenous mental health in collaboration with Aboriginal Medical Services in Sydney.
Averil is an honorary associate and associate lecturer at UNSW and USYD.
