The Australian College of Applied Psychology Alumni Team held nine professional development events in 2013 across our Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne campuses. These seminars are all recognised by the relevant counselling professional bodies as CPE hours as they are presented by leaders in the mental health and community services sector.

IMG 0054Alumni PD events in April 2013 included “The Power of Narrative – Using the Client Story” with psychotherapist (private practice) and ACAP teacher, Adrian van den Bok. This session was very well attended by the Sydney Alumni in April. In Brisbane a similar topic was delivered by narrative therapists, Jane D’Arcy and Menaka Thomas from SKATTLE and in Melbourne the focus was on "Suicide Intervention and Prevention" delivered by Kerry Dawson, Suicide Prevention Program Coordinator at Lifeline Melbourne. Lifeline Australia is a long-term partner of ACAP and so we were delighted they could present for our Alumni.

During July, 2013 the topics covered were “Addiction and its Links to Trauma” presented  in Sydney by Jeff Lucas, Operation Manager at Wesley Mission Counselling Services and in Melbourne a variation on this theme was “Young People – Alcohol and Other Drugs” delivered by Darrell Hinga, Director Alcohol and Drug Services at The Salvation Army (Eastern Victoria). In Brisbane, the Alumni explored “Suicide Prevention and Intervention” presented by Paul Norton, State Training Services Manager at UnitingCare Community.

At the end of the year, we celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Australian College of Applied Psychology across the campuses. Sydney started the celebrations with an exciting “Let’s Talk About Sex!” seminar with Dr Fiona Ann Papps of the School of Psychological Sciences. Dr Elizabeth Day, Senior Lecturer and the Chair of the Research Committee of the Psychotherapy & Counselling Federation of Australia guided alumni through “Mindfulness and the Relational Field” in Melbourne, and Dr Denis O’Hara, Associate Professor of Counselling and Psychotherapy spoke about “Hope in Counselling and Psychotherapy” in Brisbane.

The Alumni Team is always planning new events, whether for professional development, networking or socialising. Keep updated on our upcoming events.
