The roadmap to practical legal training

At ACAP, we’ve re-engineered the path to practice. Our LPAB accredited PLT course provides the flexible, industry-connected training you need for the real world. Our program is structured around four core components, designed to build the legal knowledge, practical skills and professional capabilities needed for a range of legal and law-related careers.

STUDY OPTIONS

PLT Coursework

14 weeks (including 15 days applied learning workshops on campus)

Compulsory Practice Areas: Four units
• Lawyer’s Skills and Ethics
• Civil Litigation Practice
• Property Law Practice
• Commercial and Corporate Practice

Elective Practice Areas: Two units
• Administrative Law Practice
• Banking and Finance
• Consumer Law Practice
• Criminal Law Practice
• Employment Law Practice
• Family Law Practice
• Planning & Environment Law Practice
• Wills & Estates Practice

Workplace Experience A

Choose One Option

Option A1:
• Self-organised work experience (at an organisation that meets ACAP’s placement requirements).

Option A2:
• ACAP supported work experience (for assistance, contact ACAP as soon as possible).

Workplace Experience B

Choose One Option

Option B1:
• 45 workdays self-organised workplace experience.

Option B2:
• 30 workdays self-organised workplace experience AND 1 x 3-week coursework block (additional elective practice areas are not previously completed in PLT Coursework component).

Option B3:
• 15 workdays self-organised workplace experience AND 2 x 3-week coursework blocks.

Option B4:
• 3 x 3-week coursework blocks (3 additional elective practice areas are not previously completed in PLT Coursework component).

Professional Engagement

• 10 Hours Requirement:
Build networking skills and spend time with experienced legal practitioners by completing 10 hours of compulsory professional engagement.

Activities may include:

• Undertaking face-to-face (in-person or online) continuing legal education.
• Participating in legal networking events.
• Attending a court function (e.g. a ceremonial sitting or admission ceremony).
• Contributing to a committee or working group.
• Collaborating on submissions to government.
• Participating in various law association activities.
• Volunteering in Access to Justice schemes.

Learn Through Six In-Person Practical Workshop Blocks

Workshop 1: Foundations of Legal Practice

Week 1 | Full Week (Monday–Friday)

You'll graduate this workshop with the core professional skills needed throughout the program.

Build the essential skills and professional foundations required of every lawyer:
• Ethics and professional responsibility
• Legal writing and drafting
• Client interviewing
• Problem solving
• Trust accounting
• Work management
• Wellbeing for legal practice

Workshop 2: Civil Litigation Practice

Week 2 | Friday–Saturday

Learn how lawyers manage disputes and represent clients in practice.

Apply your legal skills in litigation matters:
• Case assessment
• Drafting pleadings
• Negotiation
• Advocacy

Workshop 3: Property Law Practice

Week 5 | Friday–Saturday

Develop the skills needed to advise clients on property matters with confidence.

Gain practical experience in property transactions:
• Title investigations
• Contracts and leases
• Land use an planning
• Legal problem solving

Workshop 4: Commercial & Corporate Practice

Week 8 | Friday–Saturday

Learn how lawyers support businesses and commercial clients.

Work through real commercial scenarios:
• Structuring transactions
• Drafting agreements
• Finance and securities advice
• Negotiation

Workshop 5: Integrated Practice Simulation

Week 11 | Friday–Saturday

Work through realistic legal problems that mirror professional practice.

Bring together everything you've learned:
• Civil litigation matters
• Property law matters
• Commercial law matters
• Ethics and professional judgement
• Client communication

Workshop 6: Workplace Readiness & Capstone

Week 14 | Thursday–Friday

Graduate practice-ready with the confidence to commence your legal career.
