You’re ready to make your mark and help change people’s lives for the better. Our Graduate Diploma of Professional Psychology continues your deep understanding of human behaviour, and is the fifth year of the six years professional training required for general registration as a psychologist in Australia.

You can then complete a one-year Psychology Board of Australia approved internship to have the fifth and sixth years of training required for general registration as a psychologist.

Structure

This course is comprised of a number of core units. Core units are compulsory subjects required to complete your diploma. 

There are no elective units available for this course.

Admission Criteria
Meet the following requirements:
  •  Qualifications equivalent to an Australian Psychology Accreditation Council accredited four-year undergraduate sequence within the last 10 years (qualifications must be assessed by the Australian Psychological Society (APS) for equivalence and evidence of assessment provided), AND
  • Be eligible for registration with the Psychology Board of Australia as a provisional psychologist (which requires you to meet all the requirements for registration).

International students: Please note that as part of the registration requirements you must meet the Psychology Board of Australia (PBA) "English language skills registration standards". These standards require the demonstration of English language competency in one of a number of specified equivalent ways. One way includes through demonstration of attainment of academic IELTS overall score of 7.0 with no test score less than 7.0 in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing and speaking) and no test score in any test component less than 6.5, completed in the last two years in a test setting as specified in the standards.

This course puts you on the pathway to work in areas such as health and social welfare, social policy and research, market research, human services, disability and ageing, mental health services, juvenile justice and immigration and refugee support services.

Further Study Pathways

Graduates who complete the Graduate Diploma of Professional Psychology with a distinction average are eligible to apply to enrol in ACAP’s Master of Psychology (Clinical) with credit of up to eight units of study. You may be required to complete additional assessments prior to entry to the Master of Psychology (Clinical) and may be required to undertake additional supervised clinical practice during the program to ensure that you meet the requirements for the APS College of Clinical Psychologists.

The Psychology Study Sequence

It takes 6 years to become eligible to be registered as a psychologist in Australia. Currently the 6 years can be made up of:

  • 6 years of accredited study
  • 5 years of accredited study and 1 year of supervised practice
  • 4 years of accredited study and 2 years of supervised practice
