Double Your Impact: Combining Two Fields of Study in One Course

Three people happily discuss something at a table.

In a world where human behaviour influences every interaction, the most meaningful careers often sit at the crossroads of disciplines. ACAP University College’s courses that combine two fields of study are designed to prepare you for these intersections, equipping you with integrated knowledge that enhances your professional impact and employment prospects.

At ACAP, these courses aren’t simply about studying two subjects side by side. They’re purposefully designed so that the disciplines enhance one another, developing graduates who understand human challenges from multiple perspectives.

In this blog, we’ll cover what it means to combine two fields of study in one course, the benefits of interdisciplinary study, and the course options available at ACAP.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO COMBINE TWO FIELDS OF STUDY IN ONE COURSE?

ACAP’s interdisciplinary degrees combine two complementary areas of study. For example, rather than choosing between psychology or counselling, you can study both, gaining expertise across both fields within a streamlined three-year course. You’ll graduate with a unique combination of skills, allowing you to work across a wider range of roles and sectors, minus the additional study time.

WHY STUDY ACROSS TWO AREAS OF INTEREST?

Studying across two fields offers many advantages compared to single-discipline degrees. You’ll develop:

  • A versatile skill set: Open doors across multiple sectors with the flexibility to pursue diverse career paths or specialise in emerging fields.
  • Deeper insights: Examine human behaviour through different lenses, gaining a comprehensive understanding of your chosen disciplines.
  • A competitive edge: Stand out to employers who increasingly seek professionals with interdisciplinary expertise to solve complex challenges.
  • Innovative thinking: Learn to connect ideas across disciplines and develop creative approaches to real-world problems.

WHERE COULD YOUR SKILLS TAKE YOU IN AUSTRALIA?

Australia’s growing health and community services sectors offer a range of opportunities for those looking to make a meaningful impact. According to Jobs and Skills Australia, the health care and social assistance industry employs more than 2.4 million people, making it the country’s largest employing industry.

Opportunities extend across community and welfare services, with employment among welfare support workers growing by 34 per cent over the five years to February 2026. This includes roles such as community workers, youth workers and family support workers.

Australia’s criminal justice sector also encompasses a range of professional settings, including corrections, youth justice, crime prevention and rehabilitation. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, more than 81,500 people were serving community-based corrections orders in June 2026, highlighting the scale of services supporting offender supervision and rehabilitation.

By studying across complementary fields like psychology, counselling and criminology, you’ll gain skills that can be applied across a range of professional settings, helping you explore diverse career pathways and make a positive difference in the lives of others.

Graduates of this degree can choose to pursue rewarding careers as counsellors, mental health support workers, case managers and wellbeing coordinators across healthcare, community services and private practice settings.

Accredited by both the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) and the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC), this degree is the first step towards becoming a registered psychologist in Australia.

BACHELOR OF PSYCHOLOGICAL SCIENCE AND CRIMINOLOGY

The Bachelor of Psychological Science and Criminology is a specialised degree that examines the psychological factors underlying criminal behaviour and justice. You’ll explore how individual psychology intersects with legal systems, crime prevention and rehabilitation.

The curriculum covers forensic psychology, psychopathology, substance use and crime, victimology, youth justice, and the Australian criminal justice system. You’ll analyse concepts of punishment and rehabilitation in both custodial and non-custodial settings, gaining insights into why crime occurs and how to address it effectively.

Career opportunities span courts, corrections, youth justice and work with offenders, victims or vulnerable populations. An APAC-accredited course, this degree provides a pathway to additional psychology studies and registration as a psychologist.

MASTER OF COUNSELLING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY

For postgraduate students looking to expand their skill sets within the counselling discipline, our comprehensive Master of Counselling and Psychotherapy builds upon your undergraduate knowledge to develop advanced clinical expertise. The course enhances both your clinical skills and career prospects as a counsellor or psychotherapist.

Through staged counselling sessions and practice with alternative modes (video and telephone), you’ll develop an extensive therapeutic toolkit. The program includes 240 hours of workplace training and supervision, ensuring you graduate confident and practice-ready.

Accredited by PACFA and the Australian Counselling Association (ACA), graduates are eligible for listing on the Australian Register of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (ARCAP).
