Mastering Cultural Competence for the Real World

ACAP seeks to foster a vibrant, diverse and supportive research environment. Quality research and quality teaching are complementary, and are distinguishing features of learning cultures in higher education. As an extension of the research function, ACAP hosts an annual conference to showcase educators and their research endeavours. ACAP has a proud history of educating students with skills for making a difference, and the conference aims to bring together the ACAP learning community including students, academics and teaching staff, together with managers, policy makers, practitioners, and researchers from the broader community.

This year’s conference is focusing on preparing human services graduates with the cultural competencies required to work with the contemporary Australian population.

Keynote speaker is Dr Jaclyn Broadbent from Deakin University.

The 2020 conference will be held on the 18th September 2020 and will be hosted online. Enjoy hearing about cutting edge research to support excellent outcomes in higher education and the broader community, innovative ideas across our disciplines, as well as networking with colleagues and partners from our industries and communities.

Keynote Speakers

Conference 2020 - Jaclyn Broadbent

Dr Jaclyn Broadbent, Deakin University

Dr Jaclyn Broadbent is Associate Head of School (Teaching and Learning), the Course Director for the Psychology Honours course as well as the 1-year UG bridging program in the School of Psychology at Deakin University. She is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Research Fellow at the Centre for Research in Assessment and Digital Learning (CRADLE) at Deakin University.

Jaclyn has taught large classes (1500+) for nearly 10 years. She is passionate about providing high-quality, authentic learning experiences that engage and retain students and support them through their learning journey.

Her interest is in developing innovative, cost-effective solutions for challenges associated with the experience of first-year students, final year students, online study, and teaching large classes.

Jaclyn has over 40 journal articles and book chapters published/in-press. She has won several prestigious teaching awards, including an Australian Award for University Teaching (2016), Deakin University Teacher of the Year (2016), Desire2Learn Teaching Impact award (2014), and citation from the Office of Learning and Teaching for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning (2012).

Conference 2020 - Robert Schweitzer

Professor Robert Schweitzer

Robert Schweitzer is Professor of Psychology in the School of Psychology and Counselling at Queensland University of Technology, where he established the postgraduate program in clinical psychology.

He is a clinician, teacher and researcher, with a commitment to teaching psychotherapy, drawing upon both the rich theory which informs clinical practice, and the research literature, which provides a critical scaffolding for the application of clinical interventions. His research and publications have drawn, in part, from phenomenology and a social justice perspective, as he has explored the impact of forced migration on the wellbeing of people from refugee backgrounds.

His research on psychotherapy has focussed upon the treatment of people with more severe mental health problems including psychotic spectrum disorders. He is currently involved in developing programs applicable to mental health workers in resource poor settings in Africa.

Conference 2020 - Lisa Brophy

Professor Lisa Brophy

Lisa Brophy has a professional background in Social Work and a career long commitment to the mental health field of practice dating back to 1985. Lisa graduated with a Masters in Policy and Law from La Trobe University in 1995 and a PhD from The University of Melbourne in 2009.She has been involved in local and international collaborations regarding mental health law and its implications for policy, law reform and direct practice. Lisa is also a community member of the Victorian Mental Health Tribunal.

Lisa is Professor and Discipline lead in Social Work at LaTrobe University and holds an honorary position in the Centre for Mental Health at the University of Melbourne.

Lisa’s research focus is on people experiencing mental ill health and psychosocial disability and their recovery, social inclusion and human rights. She has significantly influenced mental health service provision in the areas of reducing coercive practice, restrictive interventions, recovery, and social inclusion. Her research has fostered strong interdisciplinary partnerships, working in collaborative research teams with academics from a range of disciplines and universities, across Australia and internationally. Her teams have also included people with lived experience and partner organisations leading to research and evaluation activities that are highly participatory and contribute to making a difference for people with mental health illness and psychosocial disability.

ACAP Research Showcase Competition

Interested ACAP students and staff are invited to submit a short video relating to their 2020 research before midday Fri 11 Sept.

Eligibility:

  • The competition is open to current academic staff and students who are doing a research project or completed one as part of their study in 2020.

Entry:

  • Submit  three minute (or less) video recording based on your research project. Feel free to include a presentation slide in your entry (if needed).
  • All video entries must be submitted as a YouTube or Vimeo link to [email protected]

Prizes

  • 1 of 4 Research prize packs including an ACAP Hoodie, certificate and $150 eftpos gift card

Categories

Prizes will be awarded to a winner in each of the following categories:

  • People’s choice: most inspiring research (as chosen by conference attendees)
  • Best student research
  • Best staff research
  • Best overall
