Double Your Impact: ACAP’s Double Major Degrees

Three people happily discuss something at a table.

In a world where human behaviour influences every interaction, the most meaningful careers often sit at the crossroads of disciplines. ACAP University College’s double major degrees are designed to prepare you for these intersections, equipping you with integrated knowledge that enhances your versatility and professional impact.

At ACAP, double majors aren’t just two subjects studied side by side. They’re purposefully designed courses where disciplines enhance each other, creating graduates who understand human challenges from multiple perspectives.

Today, we’re exploring how “double majoring” can enhance your career prospects. We’ll cover what a double major is, the difference between double major and double degree, why you should consider studying a multi-discipline degree, and the course options available at ACAP.

What IS A DOUBLE MAJOR?

A double major is a single degree that combines two complementary areas of study. For example, rather than choosing between psychology or counselling, you can study both – gaining dual expertise within a streamlined three-year course. You’ll graduate with a unique combination of skills, allowing you to work across a wider range of roles and sectors, minus the additional study time.

DOUBLE MAJOR VS DOUBLE DEGREE – WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

Wondering about the difference between double major and double degree? You’re not alone – this is a common question! Let’s break down the two concepts:

DOUBLE MAJOR:

  • One degree, two specialisations
  • Can be completed within three years
  • Graduate with a single qualification that encompasses both of your chosen fields – like the Bachelor of Psychological Science and Criminology.

DOUBLE DEGREE:

  • Two separate degrees studied together
  • Often a minimum study period of 4-5 years
  • Graduate with two distinct qualifications – for example, a Bachelor of Laws plus a Bachelor of Psychology.

At ACAP, we offer double majors because they provide comprehensive expertise in related fields without the extended timeframe. You’ll enter your career sooner, ready to build a fulfilling career at the intersection of your chosen disciplines.

WHY CHOOSE A DOUBLE MAJOR?

Double major degrees offer many advantages compared to single-discipline degrees. With a double major, you’ll develop:

  • A versatile skill set – Open doors across multiple sectors with the flexibility to pursue diverse career paths or specialise in emerging fields.
  • Deeper insights – Examine human behaviour through different lenses, gaining a comprehensive understanding of your chosen disciplines.
  • A competitive edge – Stand out to employers who increasingly seek professionals with interdisciplinary expertise to solve complex challenges.
  • Innovative thinking – Learn to connect ideas across disciplines and develop creative approaches to real-world problems.

ACAP’S DOUBLE MAJOR COURSES

A double major might be your ideal path if you’re curious about multiple aspects of human behaviour, want maximum career flexibility, enjoy exploring complex challenges from different angles, and seek comprehensive professional preparation.

Let’s explore the three psychology double major course options available at ACAP and the exciting career opportunities that each creates.

BACHELOR OF PSYCHOLOGICAL SCIENCE AND COUNSELLING

Our Bachelor of Psychological Science and Counselling combines the scientific understanding of psychology with in-demand, practical counselling skills. You’ll discover why people think and behave as they do while developing the interpersonal abilities to facilitate positive change.

Core studies include psychological processes, cognition, trauma-informed practice, lifespan development and counselling skills. This course also includes 200 hours of industry placement, ensuring you graduate with real-world experience alongside theoretical knowledge.

Graduates of this degree can choose to pursue rewarding careers as counsellors, mental health support workers, case managers and wellbeing coordinators across healthcare, community services and private practice settings.

Accredited by both the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) and the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC), this degree is the first step towards becoming a registered psychologist in Australia.

BACHELOR OF PSYCHOLOGICAL SCIENCE AND CRIMINOLOGY

The Bachelor of Psychological Science and Criminology is a specialised degree that examines the psychological factors underlying criminal behaviour and justice. You’ll explore how individual psychology intersects with legal systems, crime prevention and rehabilitation.

The curriculum covers forensic psychology, psychopathology, substance use and crime, victimology, youth justice, and the Australian criminal justice system. You’ll analyse concepts of punishment and rehabilitation in both custodial and non-custodial settings, gaining insights into why crime occurs and how to address it effectively.

Career opportunities span courts, corrections, youth justice and work with offenders, victims or vulnerable populations. An APAC-accredited course, this degree provides a pathway to additional psychology studies and registration as a psychologist.

MASTER OF COUNSELLING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY

For postgraduate students looking to expand their skill sets, our comprehensive Master of Counselling and Psychotherapy builds upon your undergraduate knowledge to develop advanced clinical expertise. The course enhances both your clinical skills and career prospects as a counsellor or psychotherapist.

You’ll explore trauma-informed counselling, neuroscience, mental health and contemporary counselling approaches. Through staged counselling sessions and practice with alternative modes (video and telephone), you’ll develop an extensive therapeutic toolkit. The program includes 240 hours of workplace training and supervision, ensuring you graduate confident and practice-ready.

Accredited by PACFA and the Australian Counselling Association (ACA), graduates are eligible for listing on the Australian Register of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (ARCAP). This qualification prepares you to support clients across therapeutic areas including mental health, crisis counselling, grief and loss, addiction, and family relationships.
