Biography
Rakan is an experienced social work educator with a proven capacity in developing and delivering high-quality teaching, training, supervision, and practice leadership. Rakan is a doctoral candidate in social work at the University of Sydney. His research thesis uses feminist, critical race, and postcolonial theories to explore family violence perpetrated by men of colour from ethnically diverse backgrounds. Rakan is the recipient of the University of Sydney Postgraduate Award.
Rakan’s background as a social worker includes significant frontline working experience in areas of refugee settlement, child protection and family violence. Throughout his social work career, Rakan held roles in different program areas with the Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ), the Education Centre Against Violence (ECAV), and non-government organisations. In 2018, Rakan received the Department’s (FaCS) Excellence in Practice Award for his work with fathers who use violence and control in their family relationships.
